Hey, everyone!
I first read this book about 2 years ago and recently reread it. And let me tell you guys. It was amazing! Just as engaging and exciting as the very first time I read it. Maybe even a bit more because I caught details I’d missed before.
So… what can I say about this book? I’ll try to put all my thoughts into words.
Fourth Wing is like… a roller coaster that goes into a tornado turned into a book and at the end of the day its a rollercoaster you want to be on. Those of you that have read it know exactly what I am talking about. I have loved the book, and well the series in general so much that this is probably my 3rd or 4th time rereading it.
The story follows Violet Sorrengail, a young women who’s thrust into Basgiath War College, a brutal training ground where the students litterally have to fight to survive. Now Violet is a bit on the smaller side for women her age and quite frankly she was not supposed to be there. She was supposed to go the the Scribe Quadrant to write current events and history but her mother, the general of Basgiath had other ideas. Right before she enters Violets older sister gives her some advice and 1 rule-stay away from Xaden. His family and hers aren’t exactly friendly. In fact his family is responsible for her brothers death and hers is responsible for his fathers death, so the feelings are very much mutual. Although they are then but in the same team where they aren’t allowed to harm one another this leads to them both eventually becoming acquaintances and don’t actively want to kill each other. They hate each other… at first. But the tension between them? Electric. What makes their relationship so compelling is that neither of them can afford to trust the other, yet circumstances keep forcing them together. Watching them move from mutual hostility to reluctant allies to something deeper is one of the most satisfying slow burns I’ve read. Their banter is sharp, their chemistry is undeniable, and the emotional payoff feels earned.
This book follows her struggle to survive at this War College and her fight to survive against the multiple people that want her dead. We get to see the growing relationship between Violet and Xaden and Violet and her mom. The first time, you’re swept up in the plot twists and life-or-death stakes all of which keep you at the edge of your seat the entire time. The second time? You notice the foreshadowing, the subtle character moments, the way relationships shift with every interaction.
